Fake test data generator

Realistic names, addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth for six countries, generated from a seed so any failure can be reproduced exactly. Phone numbers for five of the six countries come from ranges regulators reserve for fiction, and every email uses a domain that can never receive mail.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server.

Country

The same seed, country and row count always produce the same data. Note the seed when a test fails.

5 of 25 phone numbers are Indian and not in a reserved range. India has no fictional numbering range, so these may belong to real people. Never send a live SMS or call to them.

How to use

How to use the Test data generator

  1. 1Choose a country, or Mixed for a spread of all six.
  2. 2Set the number of rows and a seed. The same seed always produces the same data, so note it when a test fails.
  3. 3Copy the data as JSON or CSV, or download the CSV.
  4. 4Check the phone column. Every country except India uses a reserved fictional range, and each Indian row is marked as not reserved.

Safe fake phone numbers, by country

Test data has a habit of escaping. A notification job pointed at the wrong environment, or a staging system wired to a real SMS provider, will happily message every number in the database. So every number this tool generates comes from a range a national regulator reserves for use in fiction, where no subscriber can hold it.

United States numbers use 555-0100 to 555-0199 in a real area code, the only part of the 555 exchange officially reserved. United Kingdom numbers use the Ofcom drama range 07700 900000 to 07700 900999. Australian numbers use the ACMA fictional blocks beginning 5550. French numbers use the ARCEP mobile range 06 39 98. German numbers use the Bundesnetzagentur drama blocks in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt, which is why German records only come from those five cities.

India has no reserved fictional range. Indian numbers here are format valid and may belong to a real person, and each Indian row is marked as not reserved. Never send a live message to them; route test messages to a sandbox instead.

Why every email uses example.com

RFC 2606 reserves example.com, example.org and example.net for documentation and testing. Mail sent to them goes nowhere. Using any other domain for test data, including made-up ones, risks a real person or a real company receiving test emails, and made-up domains are routinely registered later by someone else.

Why the generator is seeded

Random test data that cannot be regenerated produces failures that cannot be reproduced. A test fails once with a name containing an apostrophe, nobody saved the data, and the defect is closed as not reproducible. A seed fixes that: the same seed, country and row count always produce identical records, so a failing run can be replayed exactly. Record the seed alongside any failure found with generated data.

Data that actually tests something

The values are chosen to exercise the cases that break real systems. German surnames carry umlauts and the sharp s. French and Australian addresses include apostrophes and accented street names. Several postcodes begin with zero, including Boston, Nice and Darwin, which find every system that stores a postcode as a number. Address order differs by country, with the postcode before the city in Germany and France and after it elsewhere, and the address field contains commas that test CSV quoting.

This is not a substitute for production-like volumes in performance testing. For that, generate data in a script using the same seeded approach, so a load test is as reproducible as a functional one.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are the generated phone numbers real?

Not for the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, France or Germany: every number comes from a range the national regulator reserves for fiction. India has no such range, so Indian numbers may belong to real people and are marked as not reserved.

Are 555 phone numbers fake?

Only 555-0100 to 555-0199 are reserved for fictional use in North America. Other 555 numbers can be assigned to real services, so a random 555 number is not guaranteed to be safe. This generator uses only the reserved block, in real area codes.

What fake UK phone number can I use?

Ofcom reserves 07700 900000 to 07700 900999 for drama and similar uses, so no subscriber can hold a mobile number in that block. Ofcom reserves drama ranges in the major geographic area codes too. The United Kingdom option here generates numbers from the 07700 900 block.

Can I send test emails to the generated addresses?

Every address uses example.com, example.org or example.net, which RFC 2606 reserves for documentation. Mail to them is never delivered, so they are safe in any test that sends email.

Why does the same seed give the same data?

The generator uses a deterministic pseudo-random sequence. That is deliberate: it lets you reproduce exactly the data that caused a failure, which a truly random generator cannot.

Does this generate national ID numbers?

No. A format-valid random identity number such as an Aadhaar, PAN or Social Security number can belong to a real person, so this tool does not generate them.

How many rows can I generate?

Up to 500 at a time, which suits functional test data. For larger volumes, generate in a script with the same seeded approach.

Is the generated data sent anywhere?

No. Everything is generated in your browser.

Need the edge cases found for you?

QAble testers work through the inputs, payment paths and data that break products in production, before your users find them.
