Dummy PDF file of any size

Need a 10 MB PDF, a 1-page PDF, or a 500-page document? Create a valid sample PDF at the exact size and page count your test needs, in A4 or US Letter, and download it straight away.

Dummy PDF file

Create a valid dummy PDF at the exact size and page count you need, A4 or US Letter. The other tabs make images, data files, audio, video and edge-case files.

Page size

1,000,000 bytes exactly. MB is 1,000,000 bytes and MiB is 1,048,576. Upload limits use either, so test both.

Choose the options, then create the file.

How to use

How to use the Dummy PDF file

  1. 1Set the number of pages and the page size.
  2. 2Enter the file size, or leave it empty for the smallest possible PDF. Presets cover the common upload limits.
  3. 3Create the PDF and check its exact size in bytes.
  4. 4Download it, or open it in a new tab to see the pages.

What a dummy PDF is for

A dummy PDF is a real, valid PDF whose contents do not matter, used to test whatever handles PDFs: upload forms and their size limits, document viewers, e-signature flows, thumbnail and preview generation, text extraction, and storage quotas. Each page here carries its page number, "Page 3 of 50", so a viewer or processor that skips or reorders pages is easy to catch.

Because the file is built to the byte, the same tool covers the upload limit boundaries: a PDF exactly at the limit, one byte under and one byte over.

Testing a PDF upload limit

For a limit of 10 MB, test three files: 9,999,999 bytes, which must be accepted; 10,000,000 bytes, where the requirement has to say whether the limit itself is allowed; and 10,000,001 bytes, which must be rejected with a clear message. Then repeat with the binary values, 10,485,760 and 10,485,761 bytes, because the front end and the server often disagree on what a megabyte is.

Check where the limit is enforced, too. A limit checked only in the browser can be bypassed, so the server has to reject the oversized file on its own, and the error has to reach the user rather than appearing as a generic failure or a timeout.

Page count and processing tests

File size and page count stress different things. A large file with few pages tests transfer, storage and size limits. A small file with many pages tests rendering, pagination and anything that processes page by page, such as preview generation or text extraction, where a 2,000-page document can expose timeouts and memory limits that a large single-page file never reaches.

Create both kinds: the same size with 1 page and with hundreds, and the same page count at 100 KB and at 50 MB.

How the size is made exact

A PDF lists the position of every object in a cross-reference table at the end of the file. The padding goes into an extra object that no page refers to, and the table is written after it with the correct positions, so every PDF reader opens the file normally and the padding is never shown. The result is a standard PDF 1.4 file of exactly the size asked for.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the dummy PDF a valid PDF?

Yes. It is a standard PDF 1.4 document with real pages and text, and it opens in Adobe Acrobat, browser viewers, Preview on macOS and PDF libraries.

What is the smallest PDF I can make?

A one-page PDF here is under 1 KB. Each extra page adds a few hundred bytes, so if the size you ask for is below the minimum for that many pages, the tool makes the smallest valid file and tells you.

What is the largest PDF I can make?

500 MB, with up to 2,000 pages. The whole file is built in your browser, so very large files need a moment and some free memory.

Should I use MB or MiB?

Whichever the requirement states, and then the other one too. 10 MB is 10,000,000 bytes and 10 MiB is 10,485,760 bytes, and upload code often mixes them up.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. The PDF is created in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Need the edge cases found for you?

QAble testers work through the inputs, payment paths and data that break products in production, before your users find them.
